Miyuki chuckled at Seika stammering over her words, and patted the younger girl’s head.

“I might’ve had it rough, but I have to overcome it, right? I always thought I could do it by myself, but after getting into 0048, I’ve realised that relying on others isn’t embarrassing or deprecating. Families are there to be relied on, and you guys are my family now.”

She got up and stretched. “Speaking of overcoming things…How long are we going to rest here? We gotta finish our run! Come on, Seika-chan! Overcome your lack of stamina!”

Laughing, she ran ahead, light-headed and a little giddy. It felt good telling her friend about her past, and letting it out instead of keeping it all inside herself all the time. She no longer had to suffer alone. She had 0048 now.

Seika beamed as Miyuki said they were family. Sure, she already thought that, but it was nice to hear the other girl truly believed it. That turned to a quick groan when the older girl made her continue running.

Picking herself up, she ran, following Miyuki. “Hey! Don’t leave me behind!” Laughing, she couldn’t help but think running was the best idea she’d had in a while.

//outofmiyu: And I think that’s a good point to finish the thread off ^^ Next thread I’ll make the starter for when I remember to, and I’ll plot it around talking about Seika’s past instead since this one revolved around Miyuki’s :D

Miyuki jumped back a bit in surprise when Seika launched herself at her, breaking out of her little reverie into the past. She could feel tears well up from the other girl’s words, but kept it back as she patted the younger girl’s head while she cried.

‘I am the older one here, after all. I can’t be seen crying in front of someone younger,' she thought, holding her tears back with a wavering smile.

“Hey, hey,” she said jokingly, trying to brighten the atmosphere. “It’s like you’re the one who just told me your depressing life story or something! What’ll bypassers think when they see you crying like this with me? ‘Oh look, that girl made her little sister cry!’ they’ll say!” She laughed, her usual cheeky smile back in place.

“I know you guys are my family now,” she said, burying her head into Seika’s hair. “That’s why I’m comfortable telling you this. I don’t want people to feel sorry for me about my past. But I feel like if it’s with you guys…” She hesitated. “I feel like it’s okay to be pampered a little. Because that’s what family is for.”

Seika sniffed as she pulled back, eyes still watery. Laughing at the joke, she smiled too. She let Miyuki rest on her head, smiling at the words.

“Mmhmm. We’ll always look out for you. You’ve had it real rough, y’know? Its… it isn’t over, but… maybe we can help you… um, feel better about things?”

Seika wasn’t entirely sure if she was making sense, but as long as her feelings got across, thats all that mattered, right?

Miyuki chuckled at Seika stammering over her words, and patted the younger girl’s head.

Seika put her knees up to her chin as Miyuki spoke. As the older girl’s story unfurled, tears started to gather in her eyes. For the girl’s of 00, for members of WOTA, losing a family member wasn’t that rare, but still…

Seika knew if she’d been in the same position, she wouldn’t have been anywhere near as successful as Miyuki had. That Miyuki still managed to smile and give her all in everything…

She sniffed a little. “Miyukiiiiii…” Launching herself at the other girl, she cried a little more. “You’re really strong, y’know! You’re really cool, Miyuki! I’m not good with these things at all, but… it may not mean the same, but we, 00, we’ll be your family now! We’ll do our best to be there for you all the time!”

Miyuki smiled, a little forlornly. “Of course, my hair doesn’t get weird glances anymore. After all, everyone has crazy hair in 0048.” She laughed at that, but it still nagged at the back of her mind - why had she been bullied about it on Akibastar, of all places? Everyone loved 0048 here, but nonetheless, that didn’t stop the girls at school poking fun at her.

How she wished her hair could actually be coloured.

Miyuki shrugged, and giggled. “Perhaps it is…” She touched her hair, which she had tried her best to model after Jurina’s regardless of the strange colour. “Or maybe it just doesn’t want me to change.”

She sighed and looked across at Seika. “It gets a little…Depressing from here, by normal standards anyway. Do you still want to know?”

Seika laughed along with her. After all, Orine’s almost round hair and Sasshi-senpai’s supposed whipped hair were a bit hard to miss! The mood became a bit sombre again, but she nodded anyway. She wasn’t good at sad stuff, or being serious, but she meant what she said and stuck to her word.

“Sure. After all, we’re friends. It means we share stuff. The good, the bad. By listening… I hope I can help you a bit, and share some of your pain and know you better!”

Miyuki nodded and smiled. She hadn’t really opened up to any of her friends like this before, except towards Chieri and Acchan right in the beginning…Other than that, she had tried to keep her past relatively quiet. It wasn’t that she didn’t want people to know about it - she didn’t want people feeling sorry for her.

Everything happened for a reason, after all.

“When I was 10 years old, a rogue DES troop attacked Akibastar at one of the 0048 concerts,” Miyuki murmured. “It wasn’t an official order to attack, I don’t think - they just wanted to cause havoc. Either way, there were a lot of casualties.” She paused. “I believe in my heart that when DES attack, they truly aren’t trying to kill anyone. Especially not the civilians. But that’s the organised troops. This one…Was just bloodthirsty. They didn’t care who they shot; civilian or idol. My father died in that, before things were finally brought under control.” She shrugged, still staring up at the sky. “But that’s the same as what happened to Sonata and Kanata - they also lost a father to DES. The difference was…” She laughed bitterly. “Mine wasn’t even trying to fight back. He took a stray bullet that was meant for me. A long, fulfilled life. Extinguished in a single moment by an object the size of your thumb.”

“My mother was also struck down during the chaos. She didn’t die, but suffered severe injuries and has been in a coma in the hospital ever since. She’s only woken up once. Other than that, for the past eight years, I’ve been living alone.” She smiled forlornly. “Which is why the bullying might have taken a stronger toll on me than normal. After all, other victims always have their parents to run back to, right? I had noone.” She rolled over and looked at Seika. “Boring and depressing, but that was my life up until now.”

“That’s the spirit!” Miyuki said approvingly. It was the exact same motto she would’ve used for how she went about with things, especially in sport - even if she was mocked about her height and ostracised because of her weird hair colour, she still tried her best…Even in team sports, where her teammates were more likely to trip her up than help her.

Miyuki stretched out on the grass, looking up at the blue sky while floating about in her memories. “I’ll start with something you probably wouldn’t expect - my hair. You see this blond streak at the front? I’ve never been able to get rid of it. My hair’s naturally red too, and whenever I dye it it’d just go back the next day. Combine that with my green eyes, and guess what the kids at my school called me?” She laughed softly. “Witch. Hair that couldn’t be dyed. Red hair, green eyes. Freakish height. Witch. If only I were really one - I could’ve turned them all into toads or something. But my school life was just the regular case of someone who was different being bullied and ostracised. I never really minded it, but because of it, I never truly had any real friends. There were boys in my sports clubs that I used to get along with very well, but they said hanging out with me was starting to become uncomfortable.” She closed her eyes. “Of course, this was after they had hit puberty and started noticing…Stuff.”

It was obvious what the boys had been noticing - Miyuki’s well-toned body through constant exercise and long legs due to her height were points of envy, even for the girls who mocked her about it. She sighed and let Seika take in the first part of her story, not wanting to overload her friend with too much information.

Seika sat quietly, letting Miyuki speak. She nodded when Miyuki stopped. “How silly of them. What business is your hair to them anyway?”

Really, her heart hurt from Miyuki’s words. She never understood how people could be so cruel, especially over something unimportant and petty! At the last comment, she rolled her eyes. “Boys have such a one track mind!”

“But really, I like your hair. Its kinda weird that it can’t be dyed, not that it matters - maybe its just going through a rebellious stage?” Seika laughed at the thought.

Miyuki smiled, a little forlornly. “Of course, my hair doesn’t get weird glances anymore. “The gui gui centre?” Miyuki asked, laughing. “What exactly is that?”

“Talk about anything and everything, huh…” Miyuki continued to stared up at the sky, her eyes fazing over a bit. “I’ve never really had anyone I could do that with, you know? I think of you as being lucky, since you’ve had the opportunity to make friends, but…Well, I’ve had opportunities too, I guess. I just never took them. Till now.” She turned over and smiled at Seika; it wasn’t her usual smile, however. It wasn’t the cheeky, mischievous smile that Miyuki was well known for, but rather a more mature, wistful one. “But really, do you want to hear about my boring past?”

“Gui gui means to always give your best! To do everything with all you have! To go straight ahead without ever stopping! I may not be the best at things, but I have heaps of passion to make up for it!”

She quietened down a bit to listen to Miyuki. “Mmhmm! Sure!” Taking a sip of her drink, she settled in to listen.

“That’s the spirit!” Miyuki said approvingly. Miyuki waited till Seika was a bit ahead, and then put on the burst of speed that had got her into the track and field team, easily covering the 100 metres…Before slowing down right before the vending machine, and letting the other girl pass her. “Hey, you won! Here, I’ll grab us a drink.”

She slid a couple of coins into the machine, laughing. It must’ve been extremely obvious that she had slowed down, but she intended to treat the other girl to a drink either way. The race had just been an excuse to get to the vending machine faster. She tossed the ice cold drink to Seika, and plomped down on the grass, patting the space beside her as though indicating for the other girl to sit.

“I know I’m contradicting what I said before about not resting till you’re completely done, but I’ll let you off for today since you’re a beginner!” Miyuki said jokingly. She lied down on the grass, staring up at the sky. “Don’t you think it’s been really fun lately?” she said suddenly, in a strangely contemplative voice. “I mean, with everyone…It feels different for me, somehow. I never really had this many people to have fun with.” She smiled and shook her head. “But you don’t need to listen to my complaining about my past.”

“Pfft, whats this about me not being a good runner? I left you in the dust!” Seika laughed as Miyuki fed the machine. Sitting down, she opened the drink. “But really, thanks Miyuki. I appreciate it.”

“After today, I’m not a beginner anymore, so I’ll keep working hard! I may not be centre nova, or centre, but I can certainly be the gui gui centre!” She took a drink, still smiling.

“I don’t mind, really. We’re friends, after all. We’re supposed to talk about anything and everything! For me, its a little different though. Since my parents own a hotel, there were always plenty of people to play with - but holidays are short, so I never really made strong friendships until 00…”

“The gui gui centre?” Miyuki asked, laughing. “What exactly is that?”

Miyuki giggled. “That’s the spirit! Besides, running with a friend is so much less boring than running by yourself! Unless you’re like me.” She contemplated it for a while, and shrugged. “But I’m used to being alone, doesn’t bother me.”

Miyuki slowed down even more, worried about Seika’s well-known low endurance. There was no way she could run at the pace she usually did and expect a first-time runner (as she saw the other girl) to keep up with her. Besides, she rather enjoyed the conversation at this pace - it was sort of like a walk through the park for her, conversing casually. One look at the other girl’s face was enough to tell Miyuki that it clearly wasn’t a casual stroll for her though. Miyuki laughed, and pointed at a vending machine up front, perhaps 100 metres or so from their position. “Race ya there! Beat me and I’ll buy you a drink!”

Seika nodded, “Thats true!” She frowned at that last bit. She didn’t want to pry, but she did want to make sure her friends were okay too.

Noticing the other girl slowing down, the brunette smiled slightly. All my seniors in 00 are so kind! Still, she didn’t have time to slow down, even though she was still struggling at the new speed. I wish I had long legs too!

In response to the challenge, she asked, “Can I at least get a handicap?” Laughing, she ran off - winning or losing something like this wasn’t a big deal, after all.

Miyuki waited till Seika was a bit ahead, and then put on the burst of speed that had got her into the track and field team, easily covering the 100 metres…Before slowing down right before the vending machine, and letting the other girl pass her. “Hey, you won! Here, I’ll grab us a drink.”

Miyuki giggled. “Tryin’ to get out of it already?” she asked teasingly. “Well, it really depends on how you run, of course. If you stop to take breaks every now and then, or if you slow down to a walk, you’re not really gonna get much more endurance than if you ran as far as you could without stopping, even if the distance is a little less than if you took breaks along the way.” She stopped as she realised she was rambling, and shrugged nonchalantly. “But yeah, it helps with your endurance, I guess.”

She laughed at Seika’s comment about running not being fun. To Miyuki who was a natural athlete, running was something enjoyable…Unfortunately, many of her friends disagreed and saw cross country day at school as the worst day of all. “You’ll get used to it if you do it every day! It might not be fun at the start, but as you improve you’ll find yourself enjoying it more.” She grinned. “Like I am. I love running, it calms me, and the breeze on my face always feels the best.”

Seika sighed dramatically, “If only I could!” She nodded as Miyuki explained things. “I see, I guess you’re right. Theres no point in doing things half heartedly~”

But the second part of the speech… “Well, if you say so..” She smiled slightly. “But I see what you mean. I don’t enjoy it yet, but the sights are nice, and its something different and almost refreshing. I’ll just have to keep trying and see how it turns out!”

Miyuki giggled. “That’s the spirit! Besides, running with a friend is so much less boring than running by yourself! Unless you’re like me.” She contemplated it for a while, and shrugged. “But I’m used to being alone, doesn’t bother me.”

Miyuki was out on her daily morning jog. She usually woke up long before any of the other kenkyuusei, due to the force of habit from when still attended high school - because of the large number of sports clubs she was in, there were a lot of times where the trainings would be held as early as 5 or 6 in the morning.

She kept up a steady pace, enjoying the cool breeze on her skin. Running was something she loved to do. It relaxed her, and sometimes she felt as though she could run forever - after all, she rarely got tired thanks to her high endurance. Speaking of endurance…

“Ah, Seika-chan!” Miyuki said, surprised that there was someone else jogging at this time. “Why are yo-” She stopped, and laughed. “Oh yeah, you got yelled at yesterday, didn’t you? Something about having no endurance! Is that why you’re out jogging this morning?” She slowed down a bit to accommodate for her friend’s pace.

Seika groaned. “Yeah yeah, rub it in why don’t ya!” She huffed a little, but what can you say to the truth? Shiftily, she looked up at the taller girl. “…Do you reckon running will help?” Because if it didn’t, back to bed she’d go!

“I wanna do my best and improve, but this totally isn’t fun!” Slightly envious, she added, “You look like you’re enjoying this way too much.”

Miyuki giggled. “Tryin’ to get out of it already?” she asked teasingly. “Well, it really depends on how you run, of course.
