On A Jog

“The gui gui centre?” Miyuki asked, laughing. “What exactly is that?”

“Talk about anything and everything, huh…” Miyuki continued to stared up at the sky, her eyes fazing over a bit. “I’ve never really had anyone I could do that with, you know? I think of you as being lucky, since you’ve had the opportunity to make friends, but…Well, I’ve had opportunities too, I guess. I just never took them. Till now.” She turned over and smiled at Seika; it wasn’t her usual smile, however. It wasn’t the cheeky, mischievous smile that Miyuki was well known for, but rather a more mature, wistful one. “But really, do you want to hear about my boring past?”

“Gui gui means to always give your best! To do everything with all you have! To go straight ahead without ever stopping! I may not be the best at things, but I have heaps of passion to make up for it!”

She quietened down a bit to listen to Miyuki. “Mmhmm! Sure!” Taking a sip of her drink, she settled in to listen.

“That’s the spirit!” Miyuki said approvingly. It was the exact same motto she would’ve used for how she went about with things, especially in sport - even if she was mocked about her height and ostracised because of her weird hair colour, she still tried her best…Even in team sports, where her teammates were more likely to trip her up than help her.

Miyuki stretched out on the grass, looking up at the blue sky while floating about in her memories. “I’ll start with something you probably wouldn’t expect - my hair. You see this blond streak at the front? I’ve never been able to get rid of it. My hair’s naturally red too, and whenever I dye it it’d just go back the next day. Combine that with my green eyes, and guess what the kids at my school called me?” She laughed softly. “Witch. Hair that couldn’t be dyed. Red hair, green eyes. Freakish height. Witch. If only I were really one - I could’ve turned them all into toads or something. But my school life was just the regular case of someone who was different being bullied and ostracised. I never really minded it, but because of it, I never truly had any real friends. There were boys in my sports clubs that I used to get along with very well, but they said hanging out with me was starting to become uncomfortable.” She closed her eyes. “Of course, this was after they had hit puberty and started noticing…Stuff.”

It was obvious what the boys had been noticing - Miyuki’s well-toned body through constant exercise and long legs due to her height were points of envy, even for the girls who mocked her about it. She sighed and let Seika take in the first part of her story, not wanting to overload her friend with too much information.
