On A Jog
Miyuki waited till Seika was a bit ahead, and then put on the burst of speed that had got her into the track and field team, easily covering the 100 metres…Before slowing down right before the vending machine, and letting the other girl pass her. “Hey, you won! Here, I’ll grab us a drink.”
She slid a couple of coins into the machine, laughing. It must’ve been extremely obvious that she had slowed down, but she intended to treat the other girl to a drink either way. The race had just been an excuse to get to the vending machine faster. She tossed the ice cold drink to Seika, and plomped down on the grass, patting the space beside her as though indicating for the other girl to sit.
“I know I’m contradicting what I said before about not resting till you’re completely done, but I’ll let you off for today since you’re a beginner!” Miyuki said jokingly. She lied down on the grass, staring up at the sky. “Don’t you think it’s been really fun lately?” she said suddenly, in a strangely contemplative voice. “I mean, with everyone…It feels different for me, somehow. I never really had this many people to have fun with.” She smiled and shook her head. “But you don’t need to listen to my complaining about my past.”
“Pfft, whats this about me not being a good runner? I left you in the dust!” Seika laughed as Miyuki fed the machine. Sitting down, she opened the drink. “But really, thanks Miyuki. I appreciate it.”
“After today, I’m not a beginner anymore, so I’ll keep working hard! I may not be centre nova, or centre, but I can certainly be the gui gui centre!” She took a drink, still smiling.
“I don’t mind, really. We’re friends, after all. We’re supposed to talk about anything and everything! For me, its a little different though. Since my parents own a hotel, there were always plenty of people to play with - but holidays are short, so I never really made strong friendships until 00…”
“The gui gui centre?” Miyuki asked, laughing. “What exactly is that?”
“Talk about anything and everything, huh…” Miyuki continued to stared up at the sky, her eyes fazing over a bit. “I’ve never really had anyone I could do that with, you know? I think of you as being lucky, since you’ve had the opportunity to make friends, but…Well, I’ve had opportunities too, I guess. I just never took them. Till now.” She turned over and smiled at Seika; it wasn’t her usual smile, however. It wasn’t the cheeky, mischievous smile that Miyuki was well known for, but rather a more mature, wistful one. “But really, do you want to hear about my boring past?”
